First Grade

The emphasis in first grade is on reading skills. We aim to provide a strong foundation of phonemic awareness and reading skills. The objective is ensure the students have a solid foundation in reading.The students make great strides in learning how to read, or the foundational skills.  Students learn short vowel sounds and spell simple words. Students learn spelling conventions. 

These skills include developing print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, and increasing reading fluency. 

Students are able to add and subtract within ten (10) and use math drawing to support conceptual understanding as they solve addition and subtraction problems. 

Students in first grade sing, listen to, and share musical ideas and choices while experiencing and exploring music through movement and play with the teacher. 

They will learn Jesus is human like us. Catholics are Christians. The Holy Spirit helped Jesus’ Apostles to begin the Catholic Church. The Bible is the Word of God and it teaches us about God and how to live as Christians. Prayers: The Sign of the Cross, The Our Father, The Hail Mary, Grace and Mass responses. 

The students will learn about plant shapes, animal sounds, shadows and light, objects in the sky. 

The early elementary grades have a common theme, focusing on basic concepts of citizenship, geography, and economics. Students sty symbols and figures in American history. The first things of the past and today.

Students participate in developmentally appropriate skills. They land on their feet, throw underhand and overhand, kick, strike a balloon, identify the right and left side, stretch, and recognize that the heart is the most important organ.
